Places To Go

Second Grade
  1. Papa Johns (Hudson) – Make It/Eat It - FREE; The coordinator for this was Melanie and she was wonderful.  We had a tour of the store and each girl made her own personal pizza which we took home along with coupons, some candy and a 20 oz drink.  Not bad for FREE!

  2. Fundamentals Toy Store (Hudson) – Manners - $6 per girl – tea party; we provided beverage and cupcakes.  It is geared for the younger girls; we did it as first year Brownies.  The girls dressed up and learned about manners and etiquette and had cupcakes and tea with real utensils and tea cups.  The owner was our hostess and she did a wonderful job.

  3. Asian Sun (Hudson) – Sports & Games – FREE; This was great, the girls got to ‘punch’ and ‘kick’ and get a feel for tae-kwon-do; no girly games here!

  4. Latouchie Tennis Center - 3200 Darrow Rd, Stow – Sports - $10 per girl; a little pricey but nice open tennis lessons; they provided rackets and balls.

  5. Stan Hywet Hall – (Akron) - $10 per girl, two leaders free; includes tour, tea and cookies and they provide the badge.  I pasted info from their website below …for both Brownies and Juniors.

Brownie Listening to the Past Badge
Brownies arrive and take a tour of the 65,000 square foot Manor House. Tour guides will focus on the history of Stan Hywet and F.A. and Gertrude Seiberling, as well as their children and grandchildren. Using primary source documents, tour guides will also tell Seiberling family stories about growing up in the magnificent manor house. (Fulfills Community Stories and If These Buildings Could Talk Badge requirement.)  After the Manor House tour, Brownies will have tea in the style of the Seiberling family. Tea will include cookies and flavored tea. (Fulfills Acting Out badge requirement.) Following Tea, Brownies will play old time games. One of the main considerations when designing Stan Hywet Hall was recreation. (Fulfills the Games of the Past badge requirement.) Brownies completing all three steps will be awarded their Listening to the Past badge.

Junior Architecture Badge
Stan Hywet is an excellent example of Tudor Revival architecture. When completed, the house included 21,000 panes of glass, 23 fireplaces, and a parade of gables, bays, and chimneys. Today, the stunning mansion provides great inspiration for budding young architects. Girls will divide into small groups and take a guided Manor House tour. Each girl will receive a notebook where she will record architectural details of the Manor House. In addition, the girls will listen to details profiling Mr. Charles Schneider, architect of Stan Hywet. Mr. Schneider accompanied F.A. and Gertrude Seiberling as well as their daughter Irene on trips to Europe where they studied different architectural styles and many homes, which served as inspiration for Stan Hywet. After the tour, girls will share their observations with the entire troop, discuss architecture around the world and participate in an activity regarding blueprints. (Fulfills Building Tour, Making Their Mark and Idea File badge requirements.) Juniors completing all three steps will be awarded their Architecture badge.

* Approximate visit time for each program: 1 1/2 hours
* Cost: $10 per Brownie/Junior/Cub Scout

  1. Canterbury Farms – Alpaca Farm – FREE -2740 Ravenna Street , Hudson, OH 44236.  I met with owner Genine Bednarski last summer with my daughter and nieces in preparation for a troop tour of her alpaca farm while we worked on the Animal Try-it.  There were time conflicts this fall when we tried to schedule it, but I plan to take the troop this spring.  There is no cost and she is very friendly and knowledgeable about her animals.  The girls are able to pet and feed them; babies are born all the time and the girls can learn a lot about these beautiful animals.  She indicated that she provides ‘alpaca’ shaped cookie cut-outs at the end of the tour and sends home fur samples and flyers for additional information.

Earning Junior Jeweler Badge
Abshire & Haylan
Jewelry Store in Stow (corner of Graham and 91)
Offers an excellent FREE opportunity for Juniors to earn their Jeweler Badge
Contact: Lisa 330-689-1990
Lisa provides a snack, juice, patch for the back of their vest... and in under 2 hours teaches the girls all their requirements for this badge (leaders just sit back, relax and enjoy). They learn about stones (they get to touch them and learn about their own birthstones), learn/see how repairs are done, make a bracelet...I would recommend this to any Junior Troop and did I mention it is FREE!

Henry Ford Museum

Good for 3rd year Brownies, Juniors and Cadettes.
Below is a link to a program that both of my troops participated in.  They really enjoyed it and it is a good value.  Not much work for the leaders and a lot of bang for the buck.  All programs, food, etc. are included.

Dearborn is close to Detroit.... only about a 3.5 hours drive.

I took troop 1156 to this event when they were Juniors.  We took the one night overnight package and then we combined it with a stop in the Laurel Highlands of PA on the way back to make it a 4 night 5 day trip.  There are numerous things to do in the Highlands (whitewater rafting, Frank Lloyd Wrights Fallingwater, caving at Laurel Caverns, biking, etc)

At Hershey we:
1. Visited the famous Hershey Hotel and spa (yes you can bathe in chocolate there) This is too expensive to stay in, but we had a good time being totally out of place as we walked through.
2.  Visit Chocolate World, where they show you how to make Hershey's chocolate (and buy it too!)
3. We visited the Milton Hershey School
We also went to a movie (because it was pouring buckets of rain when we were there)

The park is a nice medium sized park.  The girl scout programs were good.  The camping is primitive, but they also offer college dorm style housing for more money.

Wright Patterson Air Force Base

There is a Boy Scout camp right on the base (Girl Scouts can use it as well).  The sites are primitive camp sites, but there is water and outhouses on the sites.  You camp right near the runways, and it is really cool to see the jets take off and land.

I don't know if you can still do all of these things.  Their security rules change sometimes.

At the Base we:
1. visited the museum (see link below) for free
2. Toured the air traffic control tower (we asked to go when a female office would be on duty)
3.  Visited the weather station
4.  Went bowling at the alley on the base
5.  Used the base cafeteria facilities for some / all meals (they are great food and CHEAP)
6.  There is a flight school on the base.  We had a female flight instructor go through a preflight checklist with the scouts and then they got to get inside the plane as well. She talked about what is involved in getting your pilots license.

We also contacted the PR personnel (they have a speakers bureau on the base) and they connected us up with a female colonel who came out in her fatigues to our camp site the first evening and sat around the campfire talking to the scouts about what military life is like for a woman and the opportunities it has given her.
